John started his playing career at Heidelberg United in 1987, and after just one season, headed over to Greece where he played for PAOK Thessaloniki FC for nine years.  He then returned to Australia, playing for South Melbourne (1997-2001) and then Yaraville Glory (2002-2003) where he ended his playing career.  Highlights included  playing in the FIFA U20 World Cup for Australia and 2 Championships at South Melbourne.

John was appointed Head Coach at Yaraville Glory whilst still playing, and this started his career off the field.  Yaraville won the Championship in 2003, and John was lured back to South Melbourne where he took them to a Championship in 2005.  After 3 years at South, John moved to the Oakleigh Cannons (3yrs) before being appointed as Head Coach at his current club - the Bentleigh Greens (from 2011).  Since the move to Bentleigh, John has seen his team reach reach the semi finals of the inaugural FFA Cup (2014) and currently has 8 of his former club players signed to A-League clubs.

John completed his AFC/FFA B Accredited Coaching Course in 2011, and is due to complete his AFC/FFA A Accredited Coaching Course in 2015.
